There are many interesting locomotives at Westcott, and No 1831 definitely qualifies as the first experimental diesel shunter of the L.M.S. It was introduced in 1932, possibly at the instigation of the Haslam & Newton company of Derby who supplied the hydraulic transmission, and it was built at Derby Works as a nominal rebuild of a Midland Railway 1377 Class 0-6-0T steam locomotive, The frames and running gear of the original locomotive were retained, and a 400 horsepower Paxman diesel engine provided power.
